The Ambrose Light Ship at South Street Seaport, NYC. (I added the vintage look.)

The Ambrose LV87 is a floating lighthouse, or light ship. These type of ships were used when the seabed didn't provide a good location for a lighthouse. The Ambrose served the Port of New York, the Coast Guard and Fort Hancock, NJ (as an examination ship) from 1908 to 1966.

By the 1960s and 1970s, most lightships had been replaced by automated towers. In 1968, the Ambrose LV87 was permanently docked at Pier 17 of New York City's South Street Seaport, and has served as a floating museum since then.

Before It Was A Long Island Mall

In 1927, Charles Lindbergh began his famous flight across the Atlantic to Paris from Long Island's Roosevelt Field. By the early 1930s, Roosevelt Field was the largest and busiest civilian airfield in America with over 150 aviation businesses and 450 planes based there. The flight suit in this picture was worn by a mechanic and still has the original grease stains on it. (Source: Cradle of Aviation Museum, Garden City, NY)
