In 1927, Charles Lindbergh began his famous flight across the Atlantic to Paris from Long Island's Roosevelt Field. By the early 1930s, Roosevelt Field was the largest and busiest civilian airfield in America with over 150 aviation businesses and 450 planes based there. The flight suit in this picture was worn by a mechanic and still has the original grease stains on it. (Source: Cradle of Aviation Museum, Garden City, NY)
